Om appen
iNaturalist is a globally accessible educational citizen science social network (ages 10-18) that serves as the premier online hub for ecological research and connecting people with the natural world. This award-winning platform, a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society (Awards/Certifications: National Geographic Partner), is built on the core concept of collaboratively mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. It is available across multiple devices via its iOS and Android mobile apps, as well as on the Web. The platform is thoughtfully designed to encourage broad community participation, including hikers, students, ecologists, and park rangers, to create extensive community awareness of local biodiversity and promote further exploration of local environments. The user experience centers around making an observation, which records a person's encounter with a wild organism, such as a plant, animal, fungi, or evidence of life like tracks and scat, at a particular time and place. Observations typically include photos or sound recordings uploaded by the user as evidence. Once uploaded, the observation is automatically run through iNaturalist's computer vision AI model, which provides an initial suggestion for species identification, with the results weighted by visual similarity and geolocation data. Following this automated suggestion, the core of the platform’s value emerges through its social network. Other naturalists, experts, and biologists in the iNaturalist community then help to review, identify, and confirm these observations. When multiple users agree on a species-level identification, the observation is promoted to Research Grade, becoming a confirmed, high-quality data point that contributes directly to science and global biodiversity databases like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). This open data has contributed to over 4,000 research papers, making iNaturalist an invaluable resource for scientists, conservationists, and land managers worldwide. For parents, iNaturalist is recognized for its commitment to a low content risk profile, supported by a high Parent Safety Score of 93. The primary safety concern is the social networking aspect, which requires users to be at least 13 years old to create a full account. The platform mandates that users must be at least 13 to make an account for social engagement and data contribution. For all users, the platform collects personal and location data but data is encrypted to protect privacy (Privacy: Tracking: Yes). For younger children (especially those under 13), iNaturalist offers a distinct companion app called **Seek by iNaturalist**. Seek allows children to engage in nature exploration privately, earning badges and participating in challenges using AI-assisted identifications in real-time, all without requiring an account or sharing data outside the device. This makes Seek an ideal, self-contained entry point for the youngest naturalists. Registered users can write journal posts, explore information about species, and create or join projects that aggregate observations by location, taxon, or specific theme, such as BioBlitzes and the annual City Nature Challenge, which mobilizes citizens globally to document urban wildlife. Furthermore, users have the flexibility to choose how they license their content, with iNaturalist encouraging the use of open licenses like Creative Commons to ensure the data is widely available to researchers. The platform’s open-source nature and commitment to scientific accuracy have earned it a 4-star rating (Stars: 4). The platform is entirely free to use (Subscription Required: No; Ads Present: NO) and, importantly for families on the go, supports offline observation recording (Offline Availability: YES). However, as a platform reliant on crowdsourced content, the computer vision AI, while powerful, carries an inherent risk of identification inaccuracy, necessitating community review, and the platform faces a moderate risk from users uploading AI-generated images, which could compromise the quality of its research data. iNaturalist should be reviewed in real family use before recommendation. Test first-session onboarding, age fit (10–18), data collection prompts, and monetization flows. Verify whether core tasks remain usable with limited connectivity, whether navigation is predictable for children, and whether adult controls are easy to find. Keep short supervised sessions and document where children need support. Re-check links and policy pages regularly because store listings and business models can change over time.
