Om appen
Flightradar24 is a globally accessible, real-time flight tracking service that transforms a smartphone, tablet, or web browser into a comprehensive, interactive aviation utility. Designed to engage curious young people aged 10 to 18, and their families, the platform offers a unique window into the world’s air traffic by displaying thousands of aircraft moving live on a detailed map. As a valuable educational tool, it allows users to delve into geography, logistics, and technology by tracking flights, learning about different aircraft, and understanding the complex systems of air travel. The app's interface provides multiple highly engaging features for tracking planes and accessing objective aviation data. Users can simply turn their device into a live plane tracker and watch aircraft move across the globe. A favorite feature is the Augmented Reality (AR) view: by simply pointing the device at the sky, users can instantly identify flights overhead and pull up detailed information about the aircraft, including a high-resolution photo of the actual plane, its flight number, origin, and destination.
For a truly immersive experience, the app offers a 3D view that simulates what the pilot sees from the cockpit. Tapping on any aircraft on the map reveals a wealth of flight details essential for an in-depth understanding of air travel. This data includes the flight’s route, estimated time of arrival (ETA), actual time of departure (ATD), current speed, altitude, and the specific aircraft type. Also, users can tap on an airport icon to view real-time arrival and departure boards, check the flight status of all incoming and outgoing flights, see current delay statistics, and view detailed local weather conditions, making it a highly practical and fact-based educational resource. The app supports robust search functionality, allowing users to find specific flights by number, airport, or airline, and offers filters to refine the view by aircraft type, airline, speed, and altitude. From a safety and privacy perspective, Flightradar24 is considered a low content risk utility app, appropriate for its target age range of 10–18.
Its focus is strictly informational, dealing with objective aviation data. However, as a location-based service that relies on real-time data, parents should be aware that it involves moderate data and privacy implications typical of such utilities, specifically the use of 'Tracking: Yes' for service functionality. The app is supported by advertising (Ads Present: YES), but its core educational focus maintains a high general age-appropriateness, evidenced by a Parent Safety Score of 89. The technology behind Flightradar24 is itself a fascinating educational subject. The platform aggregates data from six main sources to provide its global coverage. The primary source is Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B), where a rapidly growing network of over 50,000 ground-based receivers, part of the world's largest ADS-B network, collects positional data transmitted by most equipped aircraft (approximately 80% in Europe and 60% in the US).
This data is fed to the internet in real time. For areas not covered by ADS-B, the service employs Multilateration (MLAT), which uses at least four ground receivers to calculate an aircraft's position, especially helpful for older aircraft without ADS-B transponders. Furthermore, satellite-based ADS-B receivers collect data from aircraft over oceans and remote territories outside the terrestrial network's range. Coverage in North America is also supplemented by real-time radar data, and the platform incorporates data from FLARM (a simpler ADS-B version for smaller aircraft) and five-minute delayed data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure comprehensive global coverage of over 250,000 tracked flights per day. Flightradar24 operates on a freemium model. While the basic plane tracker app is free and includes all core features, users interested in more advanced functions can upgrade to the Silver or Gold subscription tiers, each of which comes with a free trial.
The Flightradar24 Silver subscription is designed for the serious enthusiast, extending the flight history playback to 90 days, providing more granular aircraft details such as serial number and age, offering more flight details like vertical speed and squawk codes, and enabling users to set filters and alerts to track specific flights. Silver also overlays current weather conditions from over 3,000 airports onto the map, enhancing its utility for aspiring meteorologists or pilots. The premium Flightradar24 Gold subscription includes all the features of the Silver tier and expands the flight history to a full 365 days. Gold provides detailed live map weather layers, including information on clouds and precipitation. Crucially, it unlocks professional-grade aeronautical charts, oceanic tracks (showing the specific pathways flights follow across large bodies of water), and Air Traffic Control (ATC) boundaries, allowing users to see which controller is responsible for a flight. This tier also offers Extended Mode S data, which provides even more detailed information on a flight’s altitude, speed, wind, and temperature conditions during the flight, positioning it as a highly valuable reference tool for aspiring aviation professionals.
The app has garnered significant recognition, including being named a Top Travel App, and consistently ranks as the number one app in the travel category in over 150 countries.
