Sobre la app
Duck Duck Moose Math is a low-content-risk educational application designed to transform early math learning into an engaging, whimsical adventure for children aged 3 to 7. Developed by the award-winning team at Duck Duck Moose, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the nonprofit Khan Academy, this platform provides a trusted, high-quality, and fun learning experience. The core mission of Moose Math is to bridge the gap between entertaining gameplay and essential academic development, specifically aligning its curriculum with the Common Core State Standards for both Kindergarten and 1st Grade. This intentional design, developed in conjunction with educational consultants like Stanford University Educator Jennifer DiBrienza, ensures that children are mastering the foundational math concepts they need for early academic success. The app introduces a new, charismatic cast of animated characters known as The Dust Funnies, who act as playful guides and tutors throughout the math journey. The gamified learning structure is built around five multi-level activities situated in a virtual city, the Moose Juice Store, Puck's Pet Shop, and the Lost & Found. As children successfully complete mathematical challenges within these games, they earn rewards that allow them to creatively build and decorate their own unique city and its various buildings.
This innovative reward system encourages persistence, sustained engagement, and a sense of ownership over their learning progress. Moose Math’s curriculum is robust, covering a broad spectrum of fundamental math skills. The app’s activities focus on five key educational areas:1. Numbers and Counting: Children learn to count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s, with the ultimate goal of mastering counting up to 100. They develop a strong understanding of the relationship between numbers and quantities and practice number pattern recognition. 2. Addition and Subtraction: The app teaches fundamental arithmetic skills, including adding and subtracting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
It progresses to more complex problems, allowing children to add and subtract up to 20 using various tools. 3. Geometry and Shapes: Kids are guided to identify, recognize, and categorize two- and three-dimensional shapes, ensuring mastery of geometry at the Kindergarten and First Grade levels. 4. Measurement: Foundational concepts of measurement are introduced through activities like comparing the lengths of objects. 5. Algebraic Thinking: Early problem-solving and word problems are included, supporting foundational algebraic thinking skills. The five featured activities provide diverse learning experiences: * Moose Juice: Children follow recipes to make smoothies, practicing counting, addition, and subtraction simultaneously using numbers up to 20. * Paint Pet: This activity focuses on counting and matching, as users count the number of dots or shapes on various pets to correctly pair baby animals with their mothers. * Pet Bingo: A fun way to reinforce arithmetic, children solve addition, subtraction, and counting problems to earn an animal and complete a BINGO line. * Lost & Found: This activity includes a Toy Box game that helps kids practice sorting and classifying objects based on shapes and colors. * Dot to Dot: This challenge helps the Dust Funny characters find their way home by having the user solve number sequence patterns, practicing counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 100.An essential feature for parents and educators is the included Report Card section.
This monitoring tool allows adults to track their child’s progress across the 80 specific learning goals embedded in the app. This transparency helps identify concept mastery and guides additional support. The Report Card is supplemented by a Learning Portal from Duck Duck Moose, which provides free printable worksheets that reinforce the skills learned in the app’s games. Furthermore, the app incorporates adaptive technology, with a character named YaYa the bird acting as a personal tutor, responding to the child's interactions with relevant teaching hints and encouragement. The integration into the Khan Academy family of apps significantly enhances the value proposition for parents. Following the acquisition, Duck Duck Moose made all its apps, including Moose Math, completely free to download and use. This means the app operates with no advertisements and no subscription fees, ensuring a 100% focused, interruption-free educational environment.
The product has received significant recognition, including the Parents' Choice Gold Award and the Children's Technology Review Editor's Choice Award. Regarding privacy, the app is committed to following the Play Families Policy, with the developer stating that no data is shared with third parties, though it may collect device identifiers and app activity (data not linked to a user's identity) for functionality. This commitment to a safe, high-quality, and free education solidifies Moose Math as a trusted resource for families globally. Duck Duck Moose Math should be reviewed in real family use before recommendation. Test first-session onboarding, age fit (3-7), data collection prompts, and monetization flows. Verify whether core tasks remain usable with limited connectivity, whether navigation is predictable for children, and whether adult controls are easy to find. Keep short supervised sessions and document where children need support.
