About the app
Padlet is a highly versatile and intuitive digital collaboration platform, often referred to as a virtual bulletin board or digital canvas, designed primarily for users aged 10 to 18, and is globally accessible on iOS, Android, and Web platforms. It is a powerful tool for educators and students to create, organize, and share content in a visually engaging way, supporting an active and participatory learning environment. The platform functions as an interactive, digital wall where users can post, store, and share a wide variety of content in real time or asynchronously. At its core, Padlet transforms the way ideas are collected and shared. Users can quickly and easily post contributions to a shared digital wall in a multitude of formats, including text, images, videos, audio recordings, links, documents, and even digital drawings. This multimodal functionality ensures that students with diverse learning styles and preferences can all engage with the material and express their understanding effectively. The platform supports real-time collaboration, meaning all participants can see and interact with contributions as they are posted, making it ideal for live classroom activities, remote group projects, and asynchronous discussions. For parents and educators, Padlet’s main appeal lies in its flexibility for educational use and its commitment to digital safety. The platform is widely utilized to support a range of academic activities such as collaborative brainstorming sessions, curating resources for group projects, conducting peer feedback exchanges, and visually organizing concepts. Padlet offers a variety of customizable board formats, including Grid, Wall, Stream, Timeline, Map, and Canvas, allowing teachers to structure activities to suit different pedagogical goals, from chronological journaling and structured overviews to spatial and conceptual exploration. The Sandbox feature, which acts like a digital whiteboard, provides an open canvas for mind mapping and open collaboration, offering a flexible, non-linear space for organizing thoughts and developing lessons. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, ensuring that both tech-savvy and less digitally experienced users can set up boards and contribute content quickly and easily, which is a key advantage in diverse educational settings. Its extensive device support, across computers, tablets, and smartphones, ensures accessibility, and the platform works with apps for web, Chromebook, Mac, PC, iOS, and Android. Furthermore, Padlet has an *Offline Availability* feature for previously accessed content, allowing the educational journey to continue anywhere. Safety and privacy are core commitments for Padlet, which is reflected by its high Parent Safety Score (93) and official seals. The platform has earned the **Common Sense Privacy Seal** and is compliant with strict global data protection standards, including SOC 2, GDPR, FERPA, and Ed Law 2D. For parents utilizing the Classroom or School/District plans, enhanced security features are available, including the ability for teachers to set precise student permissions, adjust privacy settings (e.g., password protection or private access), and leverage *Automated Content Moderation* to help filter posts for inappropriate content before they are visible. This level of control is essential for managing the inherent risks associated with shared user-generated content and maintaining a secure learning space. Padlet also integrates intelligent features to streamline the teaching process. The platform includes **Padlet Intelligence**, which acts as a personal AI assistant (**Padlet TA**) to help teachers with administrative tasks and lesson preparation, such as generating entire boards based on simple text prompts. This focus on maximizing teacher time while supporting student creativity is part of why the platform has been recognized with the **ISTE Seal for Creativity Tools** and certified at **ESSA Level IV** for demonstrating its potential to improve student outcomes, in addition to being a **Bett Award Finalist**. While Padlet does offer a free version that allows users to create up to three active boards and includes ads, a paid subscription (like Gold, Platinum, Team, or School) is required to unlock unlimited boards, increase file upload limits (up to 1GB for school plans), and gain access to advanced features. The School and District plans provide critical tools for educational institutions, such as unlimited student accounts, user management, and direct integration with Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas, Moodle, and Google Classroom. Padlet’s blend of powerful collaboration, pedagogical flexibility, and robust safety controls makes it a highly recommended resource for enhancing teamwork and digital literacy for students in the 10-18 age range. Padlet should be reviewed in real family use before recommendation. Test first-session onboarding, age fit (10–18), data collection prompts, and monetization flows. Verify whether core tasks remain usable with limited connectivity, whether navigation is predictable for children, and whether adult controls are easy to find. Keep short supervised sessions and document where children need support. Re-check links and policy pages regularly because store listings and business models can change over time.
Selection Criteria
Our assessment is based on a review of four core pillars: privacy, age-appropriateness, educational value, and the absence of advertising. We also look to awards, certifications and other recognition. These combined factors determine the app's final safety rating.
